A. Roger Ekirch
A. Roger Ekirch has written a book entitled "At Day's Close: Night in Times Past". He teaches Early American History at Virginia Tech.
He basically says that many places used to sleep at the start of the night, get up in the middle, and then go back to bed again (this is before the Industrial Revolution).
