Correct Terms
As polyphasic sleep is an alternate lifestyle, it is no longer acceptable to refer to it as, eg. a "disorder", nor to prescribe "treatments" for it. This page provides information as to how to refer to polyphasic sleep.
Unacceptable terms
Firstly, there are a number of terms which are no longer acceptable in reference to polyphasic sleepers. These include:
- Disorder
- Treatment
- Cure
- Condition
Acceptable terms
There are a number of terms which are acceptable:
- Bimodal (but use biphasic for preference)
- Manage
- Control
Encouraged terms
The following terms are positively encouraged
- Alternate Lifestyle
- Alternative sleep schedule/pattern
- Polyphasic, monophasic, biphasic, hexaphasic, and the other terms in the glossary
- Tetrahoric (where appropriate)
- Change (sleeping schedule)
