Cultural Polyphasia
There are many cultures that practise a polyphasic lifestyle. Some more information may be found at: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/115/1/S1/204.
Biphasic Cultures
Biphasic cultures are generally more tropical than their monophasic counterparts. They have a siesta in the heat of the day, and are then up later in the evening. Biphasic cultures include:
- Spain
- Portugal
- Latin American countries
- Philippines
- China
There are also biphasic cultures in history. More information may be found in the writings of Mr. A. Roger Ekirch.
Triphasic cultures
Some say the Spanish are actually triphasic. They say:
The Spanish ... tend to sleep three times for an hour or two a time; once at Siesta (after lunch), once in the evening (before going out to the pub [bar]) and once after finishing up the night in some Bacelona dive. I did this for about 3 months 10 years ago and found it very sustainable. However, my job didn't require significant amounts of thinking at the time; not sure how I\u2019d fare now.
Hexaphasic Cultures
There are also a few hexaphasic cultures. Hexaphasic cultures include:
- Temiars of Indonesia
- Ibans of Sarawak
