Real-time Chat

Instant Messaging

You currently have two choices for real-time chat. One is to go to SleepOnline and look for people's IM details, and then IM them. The other is to use IRC.

IRC

Currently, the only method of chatting is to use IRC. You need an IRC client program (see below), and you need to put the following details into it:

  • Server: java.webchat.org
  • Port: 6667
  • Channel: #ubersleep (or sometimes #polyphasic)

Just a note about IRC culture: it's typical for people to hang out on a channel 24/7, but only look at their IRC window every once in a while (ie. half hour or so), so if you join the channel, hang in there.

Having said that, if they type something and get a response, they'll check back much more regularly (every 1-10 minutes) in the near future, so that a real chat can get going.

IRC Client programs

Windows

Visual IRC: http://www.visualirc.net/.

Mac

A few choices: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/.

Linux

Linux people who can't get their own Linux program should have a look and see if one comes with their distro (under Internet on your desktop menus). I use X-Chat (because it came with my distro), but there are many others.
